Prime Minister Essam Sharaf has dismissed Chief Coroner al-Sebaay Ahmed al-Sebaay and appointed of his deputy, Dr. Ihsan Kamil Georgi, in his place. The news was announced on the cabinet's Facebook page.
Activists had demanded al-Sebaay’s dismissal for preparing a “fabricated” report on the cause of death of Khaled Saeed, a young man reportedly beaten to death by police in Alexandria last July.
In his report, al-Sebaay said Saeed died when he swallowed a roll of marijuana, while the activists said pictures of Saeed’s body showed that he was tortured.
Al-Sebaay is also accused of falsifying the forensic reports of various martyrs of the revolution.
The former chief coroner was tasked by the attorney general to assess the medical condition of deposed President Hosni Mubarak, who is kept in custody in Sharm El-Sheikh Hospital, as to whether he could be moved to the Tora prison hospital in Cairo.
