Sorour held for questioning on charges of killing protesters

Former Speaker of the People's Assembly Fathi Sorour has been detained for 15 days pending investigation. He is charged with attacking and killing protesters during the 25 January revolution that ousted former President Hosni Mubarak.

Judicial sources say that Sorour is facing charges of inciting thugs to head to Tahrir Square and attack peaceful protesters on 2 February, in what has been dubbed the “Battle of the Camel,” during which protesters were attacked by thugs weilding weapons as well as a number of men riding camels and horses.

Egyptian media outlets on Wednesday published eyewitness accounts of a phone call between Sorour and Mubarak, in which they discussed the events of that day.

A report by the official fact-finding committee into the events of the 25 January revolution, which was released on Tuesday, revealed that former Egyptian officials in the Mubarak regime were involved in the killing of protesters. Sorour had been detained for 15 days pending investigation last week on charges of abusing his power for personal profit.
