Presidential hopeful: Constitution prior to elections subverts revolution

Presidential hopeful Khaled Ali slammed the demands of the military council to draft the constitution before the presidential elections, dubbing them "maneuvers to subvert the revolution."

There is no reason for the hurry to draft a constitution that would not fit a people that sacrificed its best youth for the success of the revolution, said Ali in a statement Tuesday.

The people will not allow the constitution to be drafted under military rule, because such a constitution would be real manipulation of the future of the country, he added.

Drafting the constitution before the handover of power confirms our doubts that the military council wants articles granting it immunity and that would prevent bringing it to account, he said, adding that this also aims at limiting the liabilities and powers of the next president.

Ali suggested that the only solution for the continuation and completion of the revolution and achieving its goals is unity. He also called upon all political powers to go to the squares on 20 April to express their anger over the council's mismanagement of the transitional period, to reject Article 28 of the constitutional declaration and reject the candidacies of the remnants of the ousted regime.

The leftist candidate said all revolutionary and national powers should overlook all differences with regard to continuing the revolution once again, and go down the streets on 20 April under one flag, that is the Egyptian flag, without raising any other flags of groups, parties and national movements that would give an image of division in the square.
