Hours before the election campaigning ban goes into effect on Wednesday night, tribes and families from the city of Arish in Sinai held a march in support of presidential candidate Ahmed Shafiq for the first time. Thousands took part.
The demonstrators held pictures of Shafiq, chanted slogans praising him and presented parts of his electoral program.
State-run Al-Akhbar newspaper said another march in support of Shafiq on Wednesday roamed Nasr City and stopped in front of the tombs of former Presidents Nasser and Sadat.
Some 40,000 people took part in the march, urging voters to give their votes to Shafiq to preserve Egypt as a civil state.
