FM: Egypt seeks to restore stability in South Sudan

Egypt seeks to coordinate with South Sudan to restore stability in the country, said Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry during his visit to Sudan on Sunday.

In South Sudan people face the threat of military conflict, food shortages and lack of humanitarian aid for the displaced, Shoukry remarked. The countries will therefore seek solutions that meet the interests of those in the south.

During his visit, Shoukry praised the peaceful solution proposed by the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), saying that through its coordination with Khartoum, Cairo seeks to bolster the agreement.

Cairo recently received South Sudan’s rebel faction leader Riek Machar, Shoukry said. He added that along with South Sudan President Salva Kiir Mayardit, efforts are being made to reach a compromise between political groups in the country. Sights are set on the acheivemnt of IGAD’s peace agreement

“The situation in South Sudan has an impact on Sudan and the neighboring countries,” Shoukry said, expressing also his hope that stability and safety prevail in the region. He stressed that stability in the south — and the achievement of the peace agreement — would allow for a shift of focus towards development projects serving South Sudan and its neighbors.
