EU to supervise elections

Chancellor Anwar al-Asi, head of the High Elections Commission, met on Sunday with the head of the European Union mission supervising the Egyptian elections upon his arrival in Cairo to discuss ways to facilitate his mission.

The group said all equipment brought in with the mission were released from customs.

An EU official had claimed on Saturday evening that the EU would not be able to supervise the presidential elections because the government would not grant entry for the mission’s safety and communication equipment.

The official had also said that it was too late for the mission observers to conduct a “meaningful” supervision.

The European Union wanted to deploy observers across Egypt to supervise the elections but sufficed with an evaluation team in the capital.
