Lisa Anderson, president-elect of the American University in Cairo (AUC) and its current academic director, announced Monday that Medhat Haroun will succeed her as academic director when she assumes her new position as AUC president in January 2011.
Haroun is the first Egyptian to occupy the role. An expert in earthquake engineering, he has been dean of the Science and Engineering School since 2005.
In press statements Anderson praised Haroun as talented and hardworking, saying she had learned a lot from working with him.
As dean of the Science and Engineering School, Haroun established new programs including computer engineering, civil engineering and petroleum engineering. Thanks to Haroun, scholars can now study for a PhD in engineering and applied science at the 91-year-old university.
