Clashes erupt outside Al-Aqsa in Jerusalem

Jerusalem–Clashes have erupted between Muslim worshippers and Israeli police at the most sensitive holy site in Jerusalem.

Israeli police say worshippers emerging from Friday prayers at the al-Aqsa mosque threw stones at policemen and at Jews praying at the nearby Western Wall. Police say security forces entered the compound to restore order.

There were no immediate reports of injuries.

Always tense, the compound known to Jews as the Temple Mount and to Muslims as the Noble Sanctuary has recently seen sporadic clashes. No one has been seriously hurt, but past violence at the site has ignited clashes elsewhere.

Israel maintains security control at the compound, but day-to-day administration is in the hands of Muslim clerics.
