Three people were killed and a doctor was severely injured Wednesday in a car accident on Ehnasia Road in Beni Suef Governorate, located south of Cairo.
Early investigations showed that speeding caused the accident, a security source told Al-Masry Al-Youm. Prosecutors conducted investigations and allowed the bodies to be buried.
A total of 1,999 accidents occurred in main roads and highways last year, causing 980 deaths and 4,392 injuries, according to a report released 15 May by the General Authority for Roads, Bridges and Land Transport.
Road and rail accidents in recent years have sparked public outcry over the government’s record on transportation safety. Many traffic accidents in Egypt are caused by reckless driving, lax traffic rules and poor road conditions.
