‘Battle of the Camel’ trial sessions resume

Giza Criminal Court resumed the trial for the killing of protesters on 2 and 3 February last year in an event commonly known in the media as the Battle of the Camel.

Twenty-five figures are accused in the case. On Sunday, Councilor Mostafa Hassan Abdallah, head of South Cairo Criminal Court, decided to postpone the session because of chaos in the courtroom.

Some former suspects who are currently released, such as businessman Mohamed Abul Enein, Ibrahim Kamel, Maged al-Sherbeeny and former Manpower Minister Aisha Abdel Hady attended the Monday session.

Verbal wrangles took place between suspect Mortada Mansour’s lawyer and security personnel at the court. Lawyers lay on the ground and chanted slogans against the Interior Ministry to reject a decision to prevent all lawyers from entering the courtroom and to only allow in those whose names were registered Sunday.

The court’s president allowed only one representative from each media outlet to attend the session.

The Battle of the Camel took place at the height of the protests that led to the fall of the former president. Pro-Mubarak thugs stormed Tahrir Square on camels and horses, killing 11 protesters and injuring more than 2,000.
