Supporters of presidential hopeful Hazem Salah Abu Ismail gathered in front of the headquarters of High Judicial Elections Commission Friday evening, calling for Abu Ismail to be allowed to run in the presidential elections.
A security official said verbal altercations occurred between some protesters and security forces after supporters tried to put posters on the armored vehicles lining the street in Heliopolis.
In solidarity with them stood a number of supporters of the Muslim Brotherhood candidate Khairat al-Shater and youth of the Muslim Brotherhood. The protesters arrived in successive marches from Tahrir square, where supporters of various Islamic movements protested during the day Friday.
The commission is to determine whether Abu Ismail is eligible to run for president based on evidence showing his late mother had dual Egyptian and American citizenship. Egyptian law states that a presidential candidate's mother, father and spouse must be Egyptian citizens only.
Lining both sides of the road, protesters shouted"Down with military rule, Egypt is a state not an army camp,"and "Come join the righteous battle, if there is corruption."
