An official source said that Egypt is among the least countries in the world that implement the death penalty, as onlyseven executions were implemented in the past two years. The sources predicted that the implementation of death sentences would increase in the coming period in light of the ongoing war on terrorism.
The death penalty is applied in 45 countries, including Japan and the United States, which apply the death penalty in 32 states, said the source, pointing out that since the beginning of this year until the first of June, 35 death sentences have been issued and implemented in the United States, three in Japan. Sixteen death sentence verdicts have been issued in Egypt during this period.
The source continued that according to United Nations statistics about the proportion of executions per 100 million people, the death penalty in the US will be applied by 11.8 percent, in Japan by 4.3 percent, and in Egypt by 2.6 percent.
Sources pointed out that from 2007 to 2012, 220 death sentences were implemented in the United States, 2,000 in China, 1,663 in Iran, 256 in Iraq, 171 in Pakistan, 152 in Yemen, compared to only 12 in Egypt.
