The Central Auditing Organization has a 73-page report about alleged financial irregularities estimated at LE1.3 million during Freedom and Justice Party Vice President Essam al-Erian’s time as Doctors Syndicate treasurer, syndicate sources said.
The sources said the organization would submit the report to the prosecutor general and hold a news conference to refute Muslim Brotherhood allegations that the Central Auditing Organization is still loyal to the Hosni Mubarak regime and that it strives to tarnish the Brotherhood’s image.
The syndicate sources said the Brotherhood Guidance Bureau ordered that the conference be held to respond to the Central Auditing Organization report in order to improve Erian’s public image amid the accusations.
During a Doctors Syndicate general assembly meeting last month, a Central Auditing Organization official said last year’s budget witnessed financial discrepancies of more than LE1 million.
Doctors from the Doctors Without Rights movement said the real deficit in the syndicate could be up to more than LE1.59 million.
If the allegations are true, they would implicate Erian, who served as treasurer from 1992 to 2011.
Erian, however, denied any wrongdoing. He posted a response on his official Facebook page, saying, “I challenge any thief or liar who falsely claims I committed violations as treasurer of Egypt’s Doctors Syndicate.”
“If they do not publish a denial immediately, I will sue them,” he warned.
