Informed sources at the Transport Ministry have revealed the development and electrification of the al-Raml area tram and subsequent postponement of the subway project in Alexandria.
The development of the tram will cost the state only 10 percent of the value of the establishment of a subway, said the sources.
The initial study, conducted by the French Development Agency, reported that the cost of converting the Raml tram to a quick electrified tram is 300 million euros, the sources added.
The project aims to resolve traffic congestion in the center of Alexandria. The sources added that representatives of the French agency expressed their willingness to fund the development and rehabilitation of the tram.
The sources said that Alexandria suffers from four separate traffic issues in the Raml area and local authorities are trying to handle them.
