The leftist Tagammu party on Thursday said it was withdrawing from dialogue with Vice President Omar Suleiman after Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak charged a committee with making constitutional amendments in violation of the agreement opposition parties made with Suleiman.
According to the agreement, an independent committee composed of judicial and political figures was to be in charge of proposing the constitutional amendments.
In a statement released on Thursday, the Tagammu Party said it was taken aback by the president’s intervention in calling a committee of his own people to deal with the amendment, compromising the committee's independence.
The party also said that despite his promise, Prime Minister Ahmed Shafiq did not begin a probe into the violence that occurred on 28 January, which has been dubbed the Friday of Anger.
According to the statement, the government also continues to interfere with national newspapers and the media despite its agreement to end such interference.
