Supply Minister Mohamed Abu Shady said on Monday that the wheat reserve is sufficient to meet demand until mid-June 2014.
“Egypt consumes 15 million tons annually and has a storage capacity of 1.5 million tons,” he explained following a Cabinet meeting.
Egypt is the largest importer of wheat in the world. The public and private sectors import 10 million tons from international markets every year. The imported crop is mixed with the local to produce subsidized bread, which costs LE21 billion every year.
