Sinai court jails 50 police officers

South Sinai Criminal court on Thursday convicted 50 low-ranking police officers for stating protest against work conditions, inciting colleagues to strike, and show of force and violence against Central Security Forces.

The court sentenced the defendants to 3 years in prison, fining them each LE500.

Ten convicted were ordered to pay LE1000 for damages incurred by their protest, while the remaining 40 are to pay LE6000 and are to be dismissed from the police force.

The events of the case date back to January, when 50 low-ranking police officers from various police sectors in South Sinai protested against a decision made by Interior Ministry to reduce the number of their vacation days from 15 to 10.
