Sami Anan, vice president of the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF), met on Thursday with a number of personalities from the various political forces and revolutionary youth coalitions to discuss the formation of an advisory council to help the government manage the country’s affairs.
The council would be comprised of 30 members, including Coptic business tycoon Naguib Sawiris, Islamist presidential candidate Selim al-Awa, legal expert Ahmed Kamal Abul Magd, in addition to the heads of several political parties.
The council is meeting on Sunday to elect a chairman and deputies.
A military source said the council-to-be already had discussed with the SCAF whether Egypt should decline US military and economic aid.
The source also said the council could later be turned into a national defense council with military personnel as members, in which case it would be able to “make important decisions,” as the source put it.
