Around 5000 members of Egypt's ruling National Democratic Party (NDP) have tendered their resignations, saying they were unable to achieve reform.
Resigned members announced their intention to establish a new party better able to fulfill their demands and respond to the aspirations of the Egyptian people.
In a statement issued Sunday, former party members denounced the policies of certain party figures, saying that they had since been joined by others who sought change in Egypt.
“We believe we have a duty and commitment to realize the demands voiced by the Egyptian people since 25 January,” noted the statement. It went on to condemn several of the principles enshrined in the NDP’s electoral platform.
Youssef Wardani, managing editor of the NDP’s official website, called on Egyptians to join former ruling party members to establish a new party to be dubbed "New Youth of Egypt."
Wardani added that members who had resigned from the party believed that democracy and poverty alleviation would contribute to a better future for Egypt.
