Moussa to vote against proposed constitutional amendments

Arab League Secretary-General Amr Moussa has said he will participate in the constitutional amendments referendum slated for Saturday 19 March like any other Egyptian citizen, but he will vote against the proposed amendments.

Before his meeting with Canadian Foreign Minister Lawrence Cannon on Wednesday, Moussa renewed his rejection of the proposed amendments. He said he considers a temporary constitutional declaration a better choice during the interim period so that a president would be elected and a committee formed for rewriting a new constitution that would fulfill demands of Egyptian people.

Then, according to Moussa, the new president would found a committee to be elected by Egyptians. Parliamentary elections would then be held according to provisions of the new constitution.

However, Moussa highlighted the importance of the next president staying in office for one term in order to achieve the uprising’s demands and establish democracy.
