Military prosecution to hear complaints against army general

Complaints filed by the April 6 Youth Movement and Kefaya against Major General Hassan al-Roweiny, concerning the general’s recent media statements criticizing the two groups, were referred to the military prosecution on Wednesday for investigation.

Roweiny, who is a member of the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF), made statements to the media last week, accusing the April 6 Youth Movement of receiving funding from foreign entities in order to drive a wedge between the Egyptian people and the military. He also accused the group of having received training in Serbia, and said that the Kefaya movement is “not Egyptian”.

The general made the statements last week to the Al-Jazeera Mubasher Misr news channel, backing up similar claims issued earlier by the SCAF.

The military council’s statements are seen by many observers as being part of a strategy to discredit the revolutionary groups in the public eye, labeling them as unpatriotic.

Last Saturday, a large group of protesters marched on the SCAF’s headquarters in Abbasseya, partly prompted by the accusations. On arrival, the protesters were attacked by groups of people in civilian clothes and bearing weapons, with over 300 casualties resulting, according to the Health Ministry.
