The Muslim Brotherhood will continue to organize mass protests every Friday until the presidential election is held and the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces hands over power, said leaders from the group’s Freedom and Justice Party. The leaders threatened to escalate matters by organizing sit-ins in various squares across Egypt if the SCAF delays the elections.
FJP legal adviser Ahmed Abu Baraka said that this Friday, in addition to the demand for political isolation of former regime figures, the protest will demand that the revolution’s goals be achieved. He went on to say that there are attempts to force the military as the main ruling authority. He added that the people have the sole and exclusive right to govern themselves and the military is not a source of authority.
He explained that the protests organized by the Muslim Brotherhood nationwide should not be considered as escalation, but as a means to emphasize the people’s right to govern themselves. He pointed out that this Friday’s protest will not be turned into a sit-in.
FJP Media Committee Member Islam Fares said the Muslim Brotherhood would be camping out overnight in Tahrir Square on Friday, and that they would raise slogans demanding the revolution be protected and saved. He explained that the upcoming protest will be a continuation of last Friday’s events.
Fares told Al-Masry Al-Youm that Muslim Brotherhood youth committees would be responsible for securing the square and that the platform would be erected on Thursday night.
He said that the most important demand on Friday would be the transfer of power by 30 June.
