The Manpower and Immigration Ministry is more closely tracking labor protests under its new leadership.
Ministry offices across the country must send in daily reports about labor protests, hunger strikes and sit-ins to an observatory established by newly appointed Minister Khaled al-Azhary.
The “observatory” is responsible for preparing reports on the reasons for the protests, the number of participants, the number of workers in the facility, solutions proposed and any measures taken by the ministry.
This week, the observatory has monitored 10 demonstrations Cairo, Alexandria, Monufiya, Damietta, Port Said and Qena governorates. Three of the labor disputes were resolved and the ministry is following up with companies and workers' representatives in the other instances, according to the ministry.
Azhary said that many cases ended with a friendly settlement such as a demonstration at the Nasser Company for manufacturing steam boilers, where workers demanded their late bonuses.
