Lawyers threaten revolt over judicial authority law

The crisis between lawyers and judges has escalated, with the former calling for a march to the military council headquarters to protest against the proposed Judicial Authority Law.

They also called for a syndicate general assembly to end judicial receivership of the syndicate.

“The receivership period has already ended,” said Montasser al-Zayat, candidate for the chairmanship of the lawyers syndicate, adding that the justice minister confirmed to him that the new law would not affect the work of lawyers.

Meanwhile, the Judges Club also called for an emergency meeting on Friday to discuss what they called continuous excesses by lawyers in courts.

Ahmed Mekky, head of the committee revising the new law, said such excess are deliberate acts on the part of the lawyers to impede the work of the judges, while Zaghloul al-Bolshy, vice president of the Court of Cassation, called them acts of thuggery.

The lawyers gave the government and the military council 72 hours to rescind the draft law.
