Lawyer says ministerial bids for parliament unconstitutional

Lawyer Nabih al-Wahsh has sent an official warning to the Interior Minister and the head of the Court of Cassation, urging them not to accept the nomination of ministers seeking to run in November's parliamentary elections. The head of the Court of Cassation will also head the Supreme Electoral Commission, which will supervise the elections.

Al-Wahsh said ministerial nomination in the People’s Assembly poll is a constitutional violation, a waste of public money, and an impediment to the proper performance of the People’s Assembly.

He said the nominations violate Article 8 of the Egyptian Constitution, as the ministers can use their governmental power within the competition, which undermines the principle of equal opportunity upheld by the Constitution.

Al-Wahsh said election of ministers would prevent the People’s Assembly from holding the government accountable for its actions; he also said he would resort to the State Council if his call goes unheard.
