Kuwait minister resigns over torture death

Kuwait City–Kuwait’s Interior Minister Sheikh Jaber Khaled al-Sabah has submitted his resignation over the death of a detainee allegedly as a result of police torture, a government source said on Thursday.

“The minister today (Thursday) submitted his resignation to the prime minister who can accept or reject it,” the source told AFP, requesting anonymity.

The minister did not return calls by AFP relating to his reported resignation.

Sheikh Jaber is a member of the Al-Sabah ruling family.

Islamist opposition MP Faisal al-Muslim, meanwhile, welcomed the minister’s move, calling him brave, and urged Prime Minister Sheikh Nasser Mohammad al-Ahmad al-Sabah to accept the resignation.

An interior ministry-appointed forensic commission found on Thursday that the death of Mohammad Ghazzai al-Mutairi, a Kuwaiti in his 30s, at a police station is suspected to be a criminal act, the ministry said in a statement.
