Eight prisoners detained at the Dier Mawas police station in Minya escaped Monday while police were preoccupied with celebrations for President-elect Mohamed Morsy.
The police captured six of the prisoners after injuring one by shooting him in the foot.
Five other prisoners refused to escape with the rest, although they had the opportunity. One of them is currently serving a life term.
A bystander was wounded by a stray shot during the chase.
Last week, the interior minister announced a plan to secure national facilities in anticipation of the announcement of the presidential election results.
The Ministry said the plan included intensifying security presence, in cooperation with the ruling military council, and protecting police stations and government institutions should violence after the vote results were announced.
