The Israeli ambassador to Cairo met Monday with Alaa Youssef, director of the Foreign Ministry’s department of Israeli affairs.
A diplomatic source told state-run news agency MENA that Ambassador Amitai’s visit to the ministry had been scheduled in advance and was among several planned consultative meetings.
The Israeli embassy has been closed since September 2011, when angry Egyptian protesters stormed it following the death of five Egyptian security officers in a border raid which Israel said was aimed at terrorist elements.
The Israeli ambassador has been performing his duties from his Cairo residence, travelling to Tel Aviv on Thursdays and returning to Egypt on Sundays.
