Interior Ministry allows Talaat Harb protest to go ahead

The Interior Ministry said it has approved a request to protest in Cairo's Talaat Harb Square on Wednesday.

The ministry announced the protest could take place in downtown between 4-10 pm, after which it would be dispersed. The statement acknowledged that protesters were "expressing their rejection of the protest law and demanding the release" of those detained the day before.

Activists announced a protest against police brutality and to petition the release of protesters arrested on Tuesday, although it was not immediately clear who had applied for permission.

"It’s certain that no one applied or will ever apply," activist Omar Robert Hamilton tweeted.

"[The ministry] may produce a piece of paper with a random name on it if needed," he claimed.

The Interior Ministry later claimed the father of martyr Gika, who was killed by security forces at Mohamed Mahmoud street anniversary clashes in 2012, made the application.

The controversial law states that activists must apply for permission three days in advance of the demonstration's date.

On Tuesday security forces broke up a protest outside the Shura Council on Qasr al-Aini Street in downtown Cairo, as dozens of activists demonstrated against a drafted constitutional article which enshrines military trials for civilians.
