High Election Committee proposes ways for Egyptian expats to vote

High Election Committee member Ahmed Khafaga has said the committee came up with two proposals allowing Egyptians living abroad to cast their votes in upcoming parliamentary elections, as ordered by the Judicial Administrative Court.

The first proposal divides world countries into zones, with a central capital in each zone to which a judge would be dispatched, while the second says expats can vote at Egyptian embassies, giving consuls the capacity to serve as judges.

Judicial sources favored the second proposal, which they said would be easier to implement. The first proposal makes Europe one zone, with Paris being its central capital, while the United States is made into two zones, and Africa is one zone.

Interior Minister Mansour Essawy said the first proposal would be difficult to implement, as the Foreign Ministry has no data of the exact number of expats living abroad. “There are only 3000 expats registered, whereas the true number is over eight million,” he said.
