Former MP summoned for questioning over FJP office arson

Prosecutors in Mahalla summoned former MP Hamdy al-Fakhrany and 14 activists for questioning Sunday, after they were accused by Muslim Brotherhood leaders of inciting protesters to set fire to the local Freedom and Justice Party headquarters.

Fakhrany, a well-known lawyer and member of the Democratic Front Party, and the others will be questioned on Monday, a security source told Al-Masry Al-Youm.

Atef Marzouq, the FJP secretary in Mahalla, had filed a report against the activists, accusing them of throwing Molotov cocktails at the party headquarters during demonstrations on Friday against President Mohamed Morsy’s recently issued constitutional declaration.

Fakhrany said he had not broken the law, and had filed a report accusing Kafr al-Sheikh Governor Saad al-Husseini, an influential Brotherhood leader, and other former Brotherhood MPs in Mahalla of hiring thugs to beat him.

“Egypt is about to witness a civil war,” he added, blaiming the Muslim Brotherhood’s dictatorial policies.

The head of the Lawyers Syndicate, Sameh Ashour, denied posting calls to burn the group’s headquarters on his website, telling the state-run news agency MENA that his website was hacked.

Ashour also said he does not announce his political stances before holding constructive dialogue, and that he would conduct a legal investigation into who hacked his website.

The FJP headquarters in Port Said and Alexandria were also attacked and set ablaze on Friday.
