Previously imposed restrictions aimed at tightening control over SMS messaging will be canceled, the Egyptian government decided on Tuesday.
In November, the Administrative Court suspended the National Telecom Regulatory Authority’s (NTRA) decision to examine SMS content, saying these restrictions will hamper freedom of expression and constitute an unjustified intervention into SMS messaging services in violation of the Constitution which safeguards freedom of speech.
The ruling remains uncontested, NTRA Executive President Amr Badawi told Al-Masry Al-Youm. He added that in the next few days the NTRA will make the necessary changes to registered licenses in order to make them consistent with the Administrative Court’s ruling.
