EgyptAir flight carrying Egyptians evacuated from Libya arrives in Cairo via Tunisia

An EgyptAir flight arrived in Cairo on Sunday coming from Tunisia’s Djerba Airport with 261 Egyptian passengers on board.

Buses transferred the evacuees after they left the Libya-Tunisia border to the airport.

The airline company said in a statement that another plane was waiting at Djerba airport for more passengers and was expected to leave by 10:30 am.

Civil Aviation Minister Hossam Kamal said on Saturday that he agreed with Tunisia to transfer 2,000 Egyptians who work in Libya starting Sunday.

"The two EgyptAir planes are scheduled to arrive with 580 Egyptian passengers on board," the minister said.

Fights have become fierce between armed Islamist groups and others loyal to the retired general Khalifa Haftar, who earlier led an attempted military coup against the current government and vowed to fight the militias whose activities have been growing since the ouster of Muammar Qadhaffi.

Many Egyptians have been killed and evacuated since the overthrow of Qadhafi. Egyptian churches in Libya have also been attacked in recent months.
