The Egyptian Trade Union Federation (ETUF) has called on the government to suspend any draft legislation that would increase prices of strategic commodities and to refrain from raising taxes on low-income segments in order to guarantee social stability.
In a statement issued this week, the federation also called for increasing the number of government outlets that sell subsidized commodities–such as meat, oil, sugar, rice and bread–in low-income areas.
The ETUF has also asked the Ministry of Manpower to grant an annual wage increase of not less than 7 percent and to take the lead in controlling market prices.
The federation statement concluded by calling for the social and economic development of the nation's shantytowns.
