Doctors’ Syndicate leader criticizes civil services law

Secretary General of the Cairo Doctors' Syndicate Ehab Taher has criticized the new civil service law No.18 of 2015, saying it was developed without the participation of approximately 6.5 million employees for whom it would be applied.

Taher criticized in a statement Sunday what he called the wide powers granted by the law to administrations in deciding on promotion and bonuses. A worker could be dismissed if his annual report stated weak performance over a period of two consecutive years, according to Taher.

There are also items in the law that did not take into consideration the privacy of doctors, he said.

The secretary general stressed the need to develop solutions to the loopholes in the articles of the regulation. The law set a minimum of working hours to 35 hours, but did not specify the maximum or address overtime regulations, said Taher.

He added that elected representatives for doctors should have been included while developing the law.
