Farid al-Deeb, lawyer for former President Hosni Mubarak, said the ex-president described Defense Minister Abdel Fattah al-Sisi as “Egypt’s hope.”
Deeb told Sada al-Balad satellite channel on Thursday that Mubarak believes that only Sisi is currently fit for the former position of president Mubarak.
Sisi’s refusal to run for president will change under popular pressure, Deeb cited Mubarak as saying.
Deeb said that Mubarak never spoke about former head of the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) Hussein Tantawi, adding that Mubarak only wished the performance of the SCAF in power was better.
Mubarak thinks ousted President Mohamed Morsy was incapable of ruling Egypt, describing him as criminal who escaped from prison and then rose to power, Deeb added.
Deeb said Mubarak had no intention to pass on power to his son Gamal, adding that this “rumor” was fabricated by the US to stir public opinion against Mubarak.
Deeb said that Omar Suleiman, former intelligence chief, offered to arrest members of US civil society organisations operating in Egypt but Mubarak rejected the idea and said that they should only be arrested if they engage in sabotage.
Mubarak appreciates former Interior Minister Habib al-Adly and does not see why he should be in prison, Deeb also said.
