‘Culture Wheel’ founder tapped for ministerial post, say sources

Mohamed Abdel Moneim El Sawy, founder of the “Abdel Moneim El Sawy Culture Wheel,” has been nominated for the position of Culture Minister to replace Gaber Asfour, who resigned the day before ousted president Hosni Mubarak handed over executive power to Egypt's armed forces, said a source close to El Sawy.

The same source said that El Sawy had been nominated by those close to Prime Minister Ahmed Shafiq, but that El Sawy had told intermediaries that he would only accept the position on the condition that other well-known figures from the Mubarak regime were removed from office, such as Petroleum Minister Sameh Famy and Manpower Minister Aisha Abdel Hadi.

The source went on to say that El Sawy had told intermediaries that his “modesty prevented him from calling his demands conditions,” but that his acceptance was nevertheless “linked with the disappearance of the old faces of the regime that had become unacceptable to the public."

“I care about Egypt’s common interests,” the source quoted El Sawy as saying.

The source also said that the intermediaries had promised El Sawy that all ministers from the previous regime planned to tender their resignations shortly.
