Court allows detainees to run for parliament

A ruling by the Administrative Court of Alexandria determined on Saturday that people under police custody will be permitted to run for the parliamentary elections slated for October 18.

According to the court’s verdict, custody detention is not a penalty, but rather “an investigative measure”. It also labelled this type of detention as “one of the most unpleasant legal measures against humans”.

Custody detention should not be a restraint on a detainee’s constitutional right to run for parliament, said the court.

The much-anticipated polls come as Egypt detains thousands of political activists from different backgrounds over multiple charges, mostly related to the breaking of the protest law.
