Conscript killed, another injured in attack on Sinai border checkpoint

One conscript has died and another been injured in an attack by unidentified gunmen on a border guard checkpoint in Sheikh Zuwayed in North Sinai on Thursday.

The guards exchanged fire before the attackers managed to flee.

A rocket-propelled grenade meanwhile exploded next to another army checkpoint in Sheikh Zuwayed. No casualties were reported.

On Wednesday, gunmen killed a police officer and wounded another in Arish.

A senior security source meanwhile said authorities had confirmed reports that armed elements are planning attacks in Sinai on Friday, the same day Islamist supporters of Mohamed Morsy are calling for mass demonstrations after liberal forces answered a call by Defense Minister General Abdel Fattah al-Sisi to combat "potential violence and terrorism" in Egypt.

The source added that leaders of the army and police met on Thursday with Ahmed Wasfy, commander of the Second Field Army, to discuss how to secure security positions on Friday.

Apache helicopters would be on hand to monitor "unusual movements," the source said.

The source also claimed terrorist groups in Sinai do not belong to the Muslim Brotherhood, but are paid by the Islamist group to launch attacks against army and police positions in protest against the dismissal of President Mohamed Morsy.
