Political groups have not yet reached an agreement on the formation of the Constituent Assembly, said Sobhi Saleh, deputy chairman of the People’s Assembly Constitutional and Legislative Affairs Committee.
Saleh said Tuesday that there is still a political divide over the minimum number of representatives of various social sectors who would be eligible to be elected to the assembly tasked with writing the constitution.
He said that when he tried to include one representative for each social sector, the total number exceeded the stipulated 100 members.
Saleh said he has prepared a bill on the formation of the Constituent Assembly that included the opinions of experts heard by the committee over five sessions, as per a request by People Assembly Speaker Saad al-Katatny.
Saleh said the bill would help resolve the stalemate in place since a court ruling annulled the previous formation of the assembly, which had been dominated by Islamists.
