The collapse of cisterns near the Nubian village of Ballana in Aswan caused sewage water to flood farmlands and cemeteries, reported Al-Masry Al-Youm on Wednesday.
Authorities cut off water from pipes close to the cisterns until the problem can be fixed.
The Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics reported in December that 75 percent of Egyptian villages lack proper sanitary drainage services.
In January, Egypt signed a US$1 billion loan from China for drainage network upgrades.
In February, al-Sayyed al-Ashri, head of the National Authority for Potable Water and Sewage, said the authority needed LE24 billion to proceed with sanitation projects in 750 villages across the country.
