The Egyptian army foiled an attempt to smuggle 2.5 tonnes of marijuana on Saturday morning in the area of Shark El Tafreaa in Port Said governorate, north of Cairo, Armed Forces spokesperson Ahmed Mohamed Ali said.
In a statement published on his official Facebook page, Ali said that border guards confiscated a truck carrying 43 plastic sacks of marijuana, known as "bango" in Egyptian slang, that were hidden under the freight of the truck.
All legal procedures are being followed regarding the seizures and the case was referred to prosecutors for investigation, Ali added.
This is one of the largest seizures in recent months. The biggest took place last September, when police discovered a 15 tonne truckload of marijuana.
