The Alexandria Criminal Court acquitted on Saturday six police officials from charges of murdering 83 anti-regime protesters during the uprising that toppled former president Hosni Mubarak in 2011.
The defendants include former Alexandria security chief Mohamed Ibrahim, former commander of Central Security Fores, Adel al-Laqqany, Lieutenant Wael al-Komy and other informants.
Prosecutors had charged them with ordering some officers to shoot at protesters to break up the demonstrations. Investigators had said the officers were armed based on orders from the defendants, violating police regulations to safely manage protests.
More than 800 were killed during the 2011 uprising. Several police officers across the republic have also been exonerated from the same charges over the past years. The rulings signal the influence the police and Interior Ministry still have in all segments of society.
