Alex governor urges rationality in face of escalating sectarianism

“The escalating problem of sectarianism must be confronted," said Alexandria Governor Adel Labib on Sunday, in an interview with state-run TV.

"The society is experiencing several problems, both within Christian and Muslim communities. But when the clash turns Christian-Muslim, it becomes a sectarian problem that must be dealt with rationally."

Citing the role played by media outlets in sparking religious tensions, Labib urged the media to refrain from politicizing the issue.

Labib said the attack on an Alexandria church just after midnight on New Year's Eve, which killed 21 and injured 96, was painful for Muslims and Christians alike, adding that it aimed at destabilizing the country.
