Wasat Party leader: New constitution will be ready before September

Vice Chairman of Wasat Party Essam Sultan said Saturday he expects the Constituent Assembly to finish drafting a new constitution before next September.

The Administrative Court is scheduled to issue a ruling in the case demanding the dissolution of the current Constituent Assembly on 4 September.

This case is the second to challenge the structure of the Constituent Assembly after a court dissolved the first formation two months ago, on the grounds that it was half comprised of MPs. Article 60 of the Constitutional Declaration states that Parliament should elect the Constituent Assembly.

According to the court, the word "elect" stipulates that MPs cannot elect themselves and all members of the committee have to be from outside Parliament.

Sultan also said that the current assembly will continue to carry out what it has been tasked with, despite various attempts seeking to stop it.
