Report: 16,000 acres of agricultural land damaged by encroachments

More than 400 cases of illegal building on lands designated for agricultural use took place since last year’s uprising, according to an Agriculture Ministry report.

The encroachments damaged more than 16,000 acres of valuable agricultural land.

The report, received by Agriculture Minister Mohamed Reda Ismail, shows that some encroachments were removed, clearing 96,000 acres of land, while 1,635 acres have been encroached upon by construction.

The highest number of encroachments was documented in Beheira Governorate, with 2,502 acres of land affected; followed by Sharqiya, with 2,198 acres; Gharbiya, with 1,926 acres; and Minya, with 1,142 acres, according to the report.

Aswan and Suez had the fewest encroachments, affecting 14 and 10 acres respectively.
