Presidential candidates will get half-hour on state TV to discuss platforms

State television plans to give each presidential candidate a 25-minute segment to explain his political platform, as well as five minutes to talk about himself, according to the Information Ministry.

The broadcasts will be live on terrestrial and satellite channels, as well as on national radio. The half-hour segments will run during the official campaign period, which stretches from 30 April to 20 May.

In a statement on Sunday, the Information Ministry said the media would remain impartial and give all candidates equal opportunities.

The statement also said state TV would explain to voters how to cast their votes and clarify the responsibilities of the Presidential Elections Commission.

A monitoring committee comprising media experts and representatives of the National Council for Human Rights would follow coverage of the elections on a 24-hour basis, in order to check whether channels are violating rules regarding time allotted to each candidate and whether the candidates are adhering to the maximum campaign expenditure limits.
