April 6 launches campaign for Egyptians to discuss visions for constitution

The April 6 Youth Movement on Tuesday launched its “Write Your Constitution” campaign, which aims to develop a “draft constitution written by the people,” declaring its rejection of the constituent assembly elected by Parliament to draft the constitution.

In a press conference on Tuesday, leading figures in the movement said the campaign aims to engage all Egyptians to share their visions for the new constitution and to encourage a nationwide discussion on its core principles.

Walid al-Shawky, a member of the movement’s political bureau, said the campaign “aims to ensure that both political and geographical differences are taken into account, so that discussions over the constitution take place with no exclusions.”

Shawky went on to say that “the campaign will cover all governorates and will provide awareness to citizens on several issues, including the constitution, the system of the state, and presidential authorities.”

He added that a draft constitution written by the people would then be presented.

Ahmed Maher, the general coordinator of the movement, said the movement does not recognize the constituent assembly, the selection of which “is completely rejected,” whether the members themselves or the way they were selected.

In a statement on Tuesday, the movement said the formation of constituent assembly was “abnormal behavior that reflects a mindset of guardianship over the people from fossilized minds that want to impose their will on the citizens and who do not know the true meaning of the state or the constitution.”

The movement denounced the “clear intent is to exclude true representatives of other groups,” noting that “the Muslim Brotherhood and Salafis did the same thing during discussions concerning consensus on a presidential candidate, behind closed doors and with a guardianship mentality that, rather than building a state, wants to build a herd.”
