Socialist Popular Alliance Party to field presidential candidate

The Socialist Popular Alliance Party said it will field its MP Abul Ezz al-Hariry as a presidential candidate, the party said in a statement Saturday.

After a meeting of the party’s general secretariat, the party said it is necessary to have a candidate whom all revolutionary groups can agree upon and who has clear political views that will facilitate seeing through the 25 January revolution’s demands.

The party said it is necessary to have discussions with revolutionary groups about its presidential candidate. It said the party should be committed to the candidate whom such groups agree upon.

In an interview with the London-based Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper, Hariry said, “I will present myself as a consensus candidate to prove that a civil candidate can win in a free election after the revolution.”

Hariry ran for parliamentary elections on the Revolution Continues list. He founded the party after the 25 January revolution.
