Clashes have broken out between Shura Council candidates in the lead up to council elections, which are scheduled for this Tuesday.
Violence erupted two days ago between supporters of the Tagammu Party and the ruling National Democratic Party (NDP) in the 6th October City, where one Tagammu supporter was stabbed. The victim’s family retaliated by burning the home of NDP candidate Essam el-Khouly.
Entisar Nessim, head of the Supreme Electoral Commission, has submitted a court request to exclude Monufiya’s Muslim Brotherhood candidate from the Shura Council elections because “he is using religious slogans” in his election campaign.
Meanwhile, Brotherhood members expressed their opposition to the NDP’s use of a mosques in Daqaliya to raise support for their candidates Khaled Hammad and Hassan Metwalli.
In Minya, security forces encircled a march in support of a Brotherhood candidate and eight Brotherhood members were arrested.
